Territory

The Golfo Borromeo

Lake Maggiore is the second largest Italian lake but certainly the first for beauty and richness: natural, architectural and landscape beauty; historical, cultural richness and tradition.
The numerous islands that decorate it are all precious jewels, and the most renowned and unmissable are certainly the three in the Borromean Gulf.

The Isola Madre, the largest, with its lush exotic garden, is the most voluptuous place I have ever seen in the world, said Gustave Flaubert. It's impossible to blame him: the main residence, the immense park and the peacocks walking around freely, immersed in a surreal, old-time, peaceful quiet.

Isola Bella, however fantastic and wonderful it may be, is nevertheless beautiful. This is how Charles Dickens describes it. Palazzo Borromeo, summer residence of the noble Milanese family, is a pure tribute to the Baroque, its gardens on ten terraces are an earthly Eden.

Isola Pescatori, the maximum expression of life as islanders, fishermen of the past, restaurateurs of today, who have transformed their most ancient and traditional profession and converted it so as not to let this place be abandoned. The rhythms, the flavours, the glimpses of lakeside life are even more evocative from here.

Borromean Islands

Monte Mottarone

Stresa and the lake are not just the islands and the walks in the city centre. Ours is one of the richest and most varied territories you will ever discover. From the beaches and the sound of the waves to the cool of the woods and walks along paths, the transition is short. About half an hour by car along a road surrounded by trees and old mountain pastures, to then reach the summit and admire the sparkle of the Madunina del Duomo of Milan in the distance, the Monte Rose massif, the Swiss Alps and the seven lakes between Piedmont and Lombardy .

On the slopes of Mottarone, in addition to tasty lunches in the numerous restaurants and refuges and regenerating walks, the more sporty can try their hand at the suspended routes of the Mottarone Park, which includes an Adventure Park, a Trail Park, Ski Park and much more.

Mergozzo and its lake

Once one with the Maggiore, Lake Mergozzo is today a suggestive mirror of crystalline water that washes the shore of its homonymous village, characterized by narrow alleys and a small square that surrounds a centuries-old elm tree and dotted with venues for aperitif and after dinner and as many restaurants.

Mergozzo is a lake that attracts tourists who love nature and water sports, as long as they are not polluting: in fact, its transparent waters are due to the ban on using motorized boats, other than electric ones. SUP, canoeing are the favourites, but a pleasant day on one of the grassy beaches is also highly recommended.

For trekking lovers, the Sentiero Azzurro, a 1.5km circus route, easy/tourist level, will allow you to reach the peaks via an old mule track and admire a unique panorama.

Vigezzina - Centovalli railway

Starting from Domodossola, the picturesque capital town of the Ossola Valley famous throughout Italy for being the D in the spelling of tax codes, elegant and practical trains depart on a dedicated railway line for a truly worthy itinerary: the landscapes that one encounters, in any season, will remain etched in the traveler's memory for a long time.
We get to Switzerland, to Locarno, a charming town with which we share the waters of Lake Maggiore.
During autumn, a special experience is the foliage train, which winds through the orange woods admiring one of nature's most exciting spectacles.
